Since the year 2008 was the 60th anniversary of both the Hürriyet newspaper and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Hürriyet (meaning “Liberty” in Turkish) declared “human rights” as the main focus of the anniversary celebrations.
To further explain the concept of ‘human rights’ affecting daily lives and to inform citizens of their rights, Hürriyet started collaborating with the Turkish State Railway (TCDD). The result was the “Liberty is Our
Right / Train is Freedom” project. The Liberty is Our Right Train was readied to visit 45 Anatolian cities and towns, from Kars to Edirne.
The 13 car, 230 meter-long Hürriyet Train, started its journey on July 1, 2008 and ended in Edirne, 45 days later. On this journey, Hürriyet’s most important partner was the TCDD and numerous public, private and non-governmental organizations - in particular Amnesty International - also contributed to the project.
The Hürriyet Train crew explained to the populations of the cities they visited the concept of human rights and informed them about the rights they have; at the same time, main human rights issues in these cities were shared with the public opinion via articles in the newspaper.
A second train, the Hürriyet Human Rights Train, made its journey from September 9 to October 29, through 38 cities in eight districts.
Hürriyet’s End Domestic Violence! Campaign team participated in the Hürriyet Human Rights Train’s 2009 journey and organized an activity that was coordinated with the domestic violence awareness activity it organized the previous year. In every city, team members met with officers from those agencies that deal directly with domestic violence cases. In these two hour long interactive discussions aimed at creating collaboration between agencies, issues such as the cooperation and communication between different agencies against domestic violence, the division of tasks, the identification of strengths and weakness and the overall perspective for the solution of the problem were discussed.
